Illumination: 21st Interactions with Art & Science Technology

  • San Diego Art Institute 1439 El Prado San Diego, CA, 92101 United States (map)

Due to COVID-19, this exhibition is currently available to view online. The San Diego Art Institute is closed for the foreseeable future.

Climate change, global health, and sustainability are some of the most pressing concerns of the 21st century, especially for future generations.

SDAI’s Illumination is positioned squarely at the intersection of art, science, and technology, and uses these interconnected fields to boost public understanding of contemporary issues and explore solutions, both real and imagined.

In creating this experiential show, 26 artists spin research into art through mediums that range from light, sound, and metal installations to soundscape, textile, and even trees.

Sixteen local artists produced work after teaming up with scientists and technologists from seven major research institutions: La Jolla Institute of Immunology, Qualcomm Institute/CalIT2, Salk Institute, Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, Scripps Institute of Oceanography, The Scripps Research Institute, and UCSD.

Ten additional multimedia artists from the region are bringing individual perspectives and personal points of view to 21st century challenges.

Curated by Chi Essary with SDAI’s curatorial team.
