Energy: Made In Form

This Thursday! View my newest installation at the SDSU Downtown Gallery...

Attend a tour at 6:00 or 7:00 and engage in an interactive activity in front of my newest installation, It's Immaterial, Products of Invisible Labor. I don't want to ruin the surprise, but I will say that we will be making sounds! Come join. It will be a memorable and fun event.

In conjunction with the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCASD), visual and performing arts converge at MCASD's new after-hours offering: Downtown at Sundown. On the third Thursday of every month from 5 to 8 PM, local, partners Stone Brewing Co. Store on Kettner, The Flight Path, and SDSU Downtown Gallery join MCASD to welcome you to the downtown neighborhood of Core-Columbia.

Enjoy free admission and guided tours of exhibitions at SDSU Downtown Gallery and MCASD, located just one block north of the museum. Take advantage of $5 drink and appetizer specials at The Flight Path Wine Bar & Bistro and Stone Brewing Company, next door to the museum on Kettner.

Energy: Made in Form, a group exhibition exploring the intangible concept of energy, visualized through the creative process. I will be exhibiting a new sculptural installation. Opening reception taking place 6-8pm February 4, 2016 at SDSU Downtown Gallery on 725 W. Broadway. DJ Professor Shadow will be spinning sounds inspired by our exhibition theme.

Free and open to the public.

Energy: Made in Form is inspired by San Diego State University’s current campus-wide Common  Experience theme 'Experience Energy'. From 19th century technology to handmade craft and the fantasy of science fiction, the exhibition explores the intangible concept of energy, visualized through the creative process. Varying approaches examine the amount of energy required in creating art, energy as a social issue, and energy as a state of being. Made in Form brings together works by SDSU School of Art + Design students and faculty with regional artists from California and Arizona.

An Intersection of Muralists

Film Premiere, Chicano Park tour, and Q & A with Mario at Gallery D

Join us to celebrate the release of a short documentary featuring legendary Chicano artist Mario Torero. Global arts network The Artist Odyssey will celebrate the release of its forth artist documentary, Mario Torero-Artivist, a short film featuring renowned muralist and Chicano painter Mario Torero. Open to the public, the event takes place at Gallery D in Barrio Logan, where the exhibition An Intersection of Muralists is currently on view, featuring Mario and other San Diego and Baja muralists.

To join the Chicano Park tour with Mario, meet at 4:15 at the kiosk/stage in Chicano Park. This free event requires RSVP at info@theartistodyssey.com or (858) 480-1264

About: Each mural artist is painting in a 8' x 12' space of an interior gallery wall. Artists are reflecting on the neighborhood of Barrio Logan, having many historically valuable murals painted during the Chicano movement in the late 1960s/70s and beyond, which is marked physically by nearby Chicano Park. Today, the mural and street art movement is experiencing a resurgence as the Barrio Logan neighborhood is experiencing a lot of development and a lot of popularity amongst burgeoning arts groups.

Exhibiting artists: Manu Faves, Esther Gamez Rubio, George Garcia, Sake Saratoga, Mario Torero, Melissa Walter, and Anna Zappoli

This year at Art San Diego, I am collaborating with the Mesa Advanced Museum Studies class and SDAI to organize and curate a booth representing a diverse group of artists from Southern California. We have named our collective booth A Moveable Feast, inspired by Ernest Hemmingway, but taking on new meaning within the context of local contemporary art, just steps away from SDAI at Balboa Park. At our particular booth, the artwork pricing will be geared toward the affordable! So, if you're looking to either begin your art collection or add to it easily, you should definitely visit us.

From Art San Diego itself: ART SAN DIEGO 2015: ART SAN DIEGO Contemporary Art Show, with presenting sponsor UBS Financial Services, celebrates 100 years of art in beautiful Balboa Park at the Balboa Park Activity Center this November (Nov. 5-8, 2015). This year's theme, [META.MORPHOSIS], will showcase the chronology of art culture in Balboa Park and San Diego.

Over 60 galleries from the U.S., Canada, Europe, Latin America and Asia will showcase paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, videos and cutting-edge multimedia artworks during ART SAN DIEGO. Visitors will not only enjoy four days of art, but will immerse themselves in dynamic programming that includes compelling site and theme specific art projects, art talks, panel discussions and a curated selection of emerging and spotlight artists.

6-Month Long Project, Participation in California Network for Collaboration To Begin

I am pleased to announce my acceptance to a development opportunity via California Association of Museums' the California Network for Collaboration: Engagement Learning Collaborative in the San Diego region. This unique opportunity called for applications to the project, and mine was accepted. The first meeting begins July 16th at the San Diego Public Library. Stay tuned for more details on what this 6-month long project entails!

July's guest curator is Dia Bassett, an artist and curator with an MFA from San Diego State University. She curates exhibitions merging visual arts in diverse media with performance and community-engaging activities. She has curated at galleries such as Planet Rooth Design Haus in downtown San Diego, and A Ship In The Woods in Del Mar, California.
